SPROUT
Mission:
To improve the health and well-being of Genesee County children by addressing ways to reduce
and prevent childhood obesity.
Vision:
Creating a community that fosters and supports healthy lifestyles for children and families.
The SPROUT Coalition was developed to collaborate, explore, and prioritize policy,
systems, and environmental change options to address childhood obesity.
Through sustainable, innovative, and evidence-based community health promotion and
chronic disease prevention interventions that promote policy, system and environmental
changes, SPROUT coalition members are working together to grow healthy children and
families in Genesee County.
Childhood obesity is a complex public health problem and the product of unhealthy
behaviors undertaken in the context of unhealthy environments and systems. Evidence
suggests obesity, poor nutrition and physical inactivity lead to reduced academic
performance, diminished self-esteem and quality of life and lower workforce productivity.
Addressing childhood obesity requires a multi-prong approach involving coordinated
efforts across multiple disciplines.
The SPROUT website was developed to provide resources to prevent childhood obesity
and raise awareness of this issue in the Genesee County. We invite you to join our
efforts.
